How to Prepare for a Lifestyle Newborn Session at a Charlottesville Studio

What to Wear, What to Bring & What to Expect During Your Charlottesville Studio Newborn Session

There is something so special about bringing your newborn into the studio for their first photographs. But I also know that preparing for a newborn session can feel a little overwhelming—especially when you’re already adjusting to life with a brand-new baby.

What should you bring? What should your baby wear? Should you feed the baby before you arrive? What if the baby cries the entire time?

The good news is that you don’t need to have everything figured out.

My lifestyle newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed, natural, and baby-led. There is no pressure for your baby to sleep through the entire session or for your family to pose perfectly.

We’ll slow down, follow your baby’s cues, and capture all the little moments that make this season so incredibly special.

What Is a Lifestyle Newborn Session?

Lifestyle newborn photography focuses on the connection between your baby and your family.

Instead of highly posed newborn photography, we’ll capture your family naturally interacting with your new little one.

We’ll still create beautiful portraits of your baby, but the session is much more about connection and storytelling. You don’t need to know how to pose—I’ll gently guide you throughout the session and help position everyone in ways that feel natural and comfortable.

When Should We Schedule a Lifestyle Newborn Session?

I typically photograph newborns during the first few weeks after birth.

This is when babies are still very tiny, sleepy, and naturally inclined to curl up and snuggle.

That said, there isn’t a strict age requirement.

Every baby is different, and beautiful newborn photographs can be created at different stages. If your baby is already a few weeks old, don’t worry—we can still create a beautiful session together.

When you book, we’ll put your due date on my calendar and finalize the exact date once your baby arrives.

What Should My Baby Wear?

One of the easiest ways to prepare is to keep your baby’s clothing simple.

For lifestyle newborn photographs, I love soft, neutral pieces that allow your baby to be the focus.

Simple onesies, knit pieces, rompers, or soft neutral clothing work beautifully.

But you don’t need to worry about bringing a whole wardrobe.

My Studio Client Closet

I also have a client closet available in the studio, with pieces specifically selected for newborn and family photography.

The closet includes options for:

  • Newborn babies

  • Toddlers

  • Young children

  • Moms

  • Dads — mostly shirts, so I recommend bringing a few options of your own that coordinate with the rest of the family

There are soft, neutral, and timeless pieces that coordinate beautifully together, making it much easier to create a cohesive look for the whole family.

If you’d like to use the client closet, we’ll choose your pieces when you arrive at the studio.

This is especially helpful for new parents who don’t want to spend time or money shopping for the perfect outfits before their baby’s session.

What Should Mom Wear?

For moms, I love simple, comfortable pieces that allow movement and cuddling.

Flowing dresses, skirts, soft fabrics, and neutral tones photograph beautifully.

And you don’t have to worry about your body looking a certain way.

You’ve just had a baby.

Your newborn session is about documenting you as their mother in this moment, not about looking perfect.

If you’d like help choosing something from my client closet, I’m always happy to help.

What Should Dad and Siblings Wear?

For dads, simple neutral clothing works beautifully—think linen, cotton, sweaters, or a simple button-down paired with neutral pants.

For siblings, choose comfortable clothing in colors that complement the rest of the family.

You don’t want everyone to match.

Instead, think coordinating colors, soft textures, and simple pieces.

The goal is for the photographs to feel timeless rather than overly coordinated.

What Should We Bring to the Studio?

You really don’t need to bring much.

For your newborn, I recommend having:

  • Diapers

  • Wipes

  • A pacifier, if your baby uses one

  • A bottle or anything needed for feeding

  • A change of clothes

  • A favorite blanket or comfort item

You can also bring something meaningful you’d like included in a few photographs—a special blanket, tiny shoes, a family heirloom, or another small item connected to your baby.

But don’t feel like you need to bring props.

Your baby is enough.

Should I Feed My Baby Before the Session?

If possible, I recommend keeping your baby awake for a little while before the session and feeding your baby shortly before we begin.

A full belly often helps babies settle and relax.

However, if you’d rather feed your baby as soon as you arrive at the studio, that’s completely fine too. We can take a few minutes to get everyone settled, and you can feed your baby before we begin.

Newborns are unpredictable, and that’s completely okay.

If your baby becomes hungry during the session, we’ll stop and feed.

If they need a diaper change, we’ll take a break.

If they need to be held, rocked, or soothed, we’ll do that too.

There is absolutely no need to apologize for any of it.

Your baby’s needs always come first.

What If My Baby Won’t Sleep?

This is one of the most common questions I receive from new parents.

And my answer is: don’t worry.

Your baby does not have to sleep for the entire session.

Some of my favorite newborn photographs are of babies who are awake—looking around, stretching, making little faces, or looking up at their parents.

Lifestyle newborn photography isn’t about creating one particular pose.

It’s about capturing your baby exactly as they are.

What If My Baby Cries?

Babies cry.

It’s normal.

And sometimes those moments are part of the story, too.

We’ll take as many breaks as your baby needs. You can feed, change, rock, or cuddle your baby whenever necessary.

There is no rush.

My studio newborn sessions are intentionally relaxed so we can follow your baby’s rhythm rather than forcing the baby to fit into a schedule.

What About Siblings?

If you have older children, don’t worry if they aren’t interested in sitting quietly next to the baby.

They are children!

We’ll start the session with family photographs and sibling photographs while everyone is together. After we’ve captured those moments, your older children can take a little break and play while we focus on the new baby.

You’re welcome to bring another adult who can help keep an eye on the kids or take them out for ice cream or a little adventure if they need a break—but that’s absolutely not necessary.

I also have a few toys in the studio, and your children are welcome to simply play and be themselves.

I’ll use gentle prompts and simple interactions to encourage natural connection between siblings.

We might have them:

  • Give the baby a kiss

  • Hold tiny hands

  • Cuddle next to mom

  • Tell me something about their new sibling

  • Look at the baby together

  • Snuggle with mom and dad

And if they need a break, that’s okay too.

We don’t need to force a smile or interaction.

Some of the sweetest sibling photographs happen when children aren’t even aware they’re being photographed.

What Should We Do Before the Session?

The best thing you can do is keep the morning simple.

Try not to schedule too much before your session.

Give yourself plenty of time to feed the baby, get everyone dressed, and arrive at the studio without feeling rushed.

If you have older children, let them know ahead of time that they’ll be coming to the studio to meet and photograph their new sibling. Keeping expectations simple can help everyone feel more relaxed.

And remember—you don’t need to arrive with a perfectly sleeping baby and perfectly prepared family.

We’ll take it from there.

The Most Important Thing to Remember

You don’t need to make your newborn session perfect.

You don’t need a perfectly sleeping baby.

You don’t need perfectly behaved siblings.

You don’t need to lose the baby weight.

You don’t need to know how to pose.

And you definitely don’t need to have everything figured out.

Just bring your baby, your family, and yourselves.

I’ll take care of the rest.

These first weeks go by incredibly quickly. Your baby will change so much in such a short amount of time.

My goal is to give you photographs that allow you to remember not only what your baby looked like—but how this season felt.

The tiny fingers.

The sleepy cuddles.

The way your baby fit perfectly in your arms.

The newness of becoming a family.

Those are the moments worth remembering.
